This week, the Church will experience a papal conclave where cardinals all over the world will deliberate and elect the next pope. As we eagerly wait for their choice, Francis Maier joins Mark Brumley to discuss what kind of pope the Church needs today. He articulately argues that he must be both a man of simplicity and of strong intellect who embodies the strengths of the last several pontiffs. In short, the next pope must model himself after the first pope—Peter.
Maier discusses several challenges that the Church and the next pope faces today, but ultimately, he offers a message of hope and encouragement in these often-troubled times. He highlights the risk of focusing too much on the politics of the Church and stresses the importance of continued personal conversion, especially through the reception of Reconciliation and frequent hours of Eucharistic adoration.

Francis Maier: Approaching the Conclave, What Does the Church Need Now?

The Wedding of Magdeburg – Episode 1

The Catholic Church is on the verge of a transition of great consequence.
 


As a Catholic theologian, historian, and papal biographer George Weigel notes, the next pope will probably have been a teenager or a very young man during the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965); he may even have been a child during those years. Thus the next pope will not have been shaped by the experience of the Council and the immediate debates over its meaning and reception like Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. The next pope, Weigel writes, "will be a transitional figure in a different way than his immediate predecessors. So it seems appropriate to ponder now what the Church has learned during the pontificates of these three conciliar popes—and to suggest what the next pope might take from that learning."
 


Drawing on his personal discussions with John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, as well as his decades of experience with Catholics from every continent, George Weigel examines the major challenges confronting the Catholic Church and its 1.3 billion believers in the twenty-first century: challenges the next pontificate must address as the Church enters new, uncharted territory. To what is the Holy Spirit calling this Church-in-transition? What are the qualities needed in the man who will lead the Church from the Chair of Saint Peter?

Bronwen McShea: The history of Catholic women is the history of the Church

<DIV>On August 9, 1945, an American B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, killing tens of thousands of people in the blink of an eye, while fatally injuring and poisoning thousands more. Among the survivors was Takashi Nagai, a pioneer in radiology research and a convert to the Catholic Faith. Living in the rubble of the ruined city and suffering from leukemia caused by over-exposure to radiation, Nagai lived out the remainder of his remarkable life by bringing physical and spiritual healing to his war-weary people. A Song for Nagasaki tells the moving story of this extraordinary man, beginning with his boyhood and the heroic tales and stoic virtues of his family's Shinto religion. It reveals the inspiring story of Nagai's remarkable spiritual journey from Shintoism to atheism to Catholicism. Mixed with interesting details about Japanese history and culture, the biography traces Nagai's spiritual quest as he studied medicine at Nagasaki University, served as a medic with the Japanese army during its occupation of Manchuria, and returned to Nagasaki to dedicate himself to the science of radiology. The historic Catholic district of the city, where Nagai became a Catholic and began a family, was ground zero for the atomic bomb. After the bomb disaster that killed thousands, including Nagai's beloved wife, Nagai, then Dean of Radiology at Nagasaki University, threw himself into service to the countless victims of the bomb explosion, even though it meant deadly exposure to the radiation which eventually would cause his own death. While dying, he also wrote powerful books that became best-sellers in Japan. These included The Bells of Nagasaki, which resonated deeply with the Japanese people in their great suffering as it explores the Christian message of love and forgiveness. Nagai became a highly revered man and is considered a saint by many Japanese people. A Song for Nagasaki: The Story of Takashi Nagai a Scientist, Convert, and Survivor of the Atomic Bomb

<DIV>While the story of the apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858 are well known, relatively few people are familiar with the saint's own spiritual insights and profound holiness. For the first time in English, this book presents a wide selection of St. Bernadette's thoughts, advice, sayings, and prayers through the touching words of her spiritual diary, notes, and letters to friends and family. After receiving the visions of Our Lady at the grotto in Lourdes, Bernadette eventually became a religious sister as a member of the Sisters of Charity. She lived a life of simplicity, charity, suffering and deep holiness, dying at the age of 35. When she was canonized a saint, her body was found to be incorrupt. In these beautiful writings of St. Bernadette, we learn the secrets of her holiness and happiness. This powerful epic film depicts the life of now Blessed Carlo Gnocchi, an Italian priest who labored heroically to minister to the wounded and dying soldiers during World War II, and later to child victims of the war on the home front. While teaching students at the Gonzaga Institute in Milan, Fr. Gnocchi volunteered to be the military chaplain on the war front. After witnessing the horrors of the war, helping many suffering and dying soldiers, and miraculously escaping death himself, he returned to start a foundation for the many children who were victims of the war.
Starring Daniele Liotti (Saint Anthony of Padua), this film tells of Don Gnocchi&rsquo;s inspiring work with the students, the soldiers, and the children. His great legacy lives on today in the Don Carlo Gnocchi Foundation, which provides medical care for thousands of patients in over 75 hospitals and clinics throughout Europe. He died in 1956 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
&ldquo;Father Gnocchi not only responded to concrete and urgent needs, but above all he did so in an extremely modern way, because of his keen educational sensitivity.
