George Weigel: The State of the Church and the Next Pope

<DIV>Hans Urs von Balthasar made detailed statements about his work on five occasions, mostly on the birthdays that marked the end of a decade of his life: as a young author in his "desire to lift out of the jumble of history the four or five figures which represent for me the constellation of my idea and my mission;" as publisher and writer, "out of concern for the reader" and in order to equip this reader with a guide to his own books. Then, in the midst of the transformations connected with the Council, he wrote an "Account" for himself and his readers, about what had been done, and what was still required.Finally, in a kind of pause, as one already looking toward the close of his life, he gave once again an account of what had been achieved and what could no longer be achieved, in a clear shift of emphasis away from his "authorship" in favor of the pastoral work in the communities which he had founded. This present volume is a helpful guide to his many-sided work.</DIV>

This film is presented in dubbed English.
This powerful epic film depicts the life of now Blessed Carlo Gnocchi, an Italian priest who labored heroically to minister to the wounded and dying soldiers during World War II, and later to child victims of the war on the home front. While teaching students at the Gonzaga Institute in Milan, Fr. Gnocchi volunteered to be the military chaplain on the war front. After witnessing the horrors of the war, helping many suffering and dying soldiers, and miraculously escaping death himself, he returned to start a foundation for the many children who were victims of the war.
Starring Daniele Liotti (Saint Anthony of Padua), this film tells of Don Gnocchi&rsquo;s inspiring work with the students, the soldiers, and the children. His great legacy lives on today in the Don Carlo Gnocchi Foundation, which provides medical care for thousands of patients in over 75 hospitals and clinics throughout Europe. He died in 1956 and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
&ldquo;Father Gnocchi not only responded to concrete and urgent needs, but above all he did so in an extremely modern way, because of his keen educational sensitivity. He was not content just to help people but sought to &lsquo;rehabilitate them,&rsquo; encourage them, enable them to find the condition of life best suited to their dignity. His early death was the seal to a life entirely given to God and to his neighbours. It was his wish that, even after his death, something of himself be donated: he offered the corneas of his eyes to a blind boy and girl, who from 29 February 1956, the day after his death, could thus begin to see. Don Carlo Gnocchi&rsquo;s whole life, and also his death, is a shining sign of hope. <DIV>Everyone needs love. Everyone desires love. But not everyone understands love. In fact, love is probably the most misunderstood subject in history. In his first Encyclical, Pope Benedict helps to clarify the meaning of love. He examines the nature of various kinds of love&#151;human love and divine love, eros, friendship, and charity. He writes beautifully and inspirationally of how man was made for love by the God who is love, the God who became one of us out of love&#151;Jesus Christ. In the second part of the Encyclical, Benedict addresses the Church's practice of love. He examines the relationship between justice and charity, as well as the call of every Catholic to serve others in love. The Pope's &#34;love letter&#34; to mankind is remarkably accessible and timely. Jewels from &#x201C;God Is Love&#x201D; Deus Caritas Est&#34;'God is love and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him' (1 Jn 4:16). These words from the First Letter of John express with remarkable clarity the heart of the Christian faith: the Christian image of God and the resulting image of mankind and its destiny.&#34; &#34;We have come to believe in God's love: in these words the Christian can express the fundamental decision of his life. Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, that gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.&#34; &#34;St. John's Gospel describes that event in these words: 'God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should . . . have eternal life' (3:16). In acknowledging the centrality of love, Christian faith has retained the core of Israel's faith, while at the same time giving it new depth and breadth.&#34; &#34;In a world where the name of God is sometimes associated with vengeance or even a duty of hatred and violence, this message is both timely and significant. The movie underscores her special role in God&rsquo;s plan for our redemption, her unique relationship with Christ, and the tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his Passion and Death, as well as her serene joy at his Resurrection. This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. It may contain violence indicative of the life and times of the saint or character portrayed. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children.
