Author Interview with Trent Horn on his book, ”The Case for Catholicism”

This week, the Church will experience a papal conclave where cardinals all over the world will deliberate and elect the next pope. As we eagerly wait for their choice, Francis Maier joins Mark Brumley to discuss what kind of pope the Church needs today. The somewhat religious odyssey of Fr. Dwight Longenecker

On Friday, March 20, 2009, fifteen months after the City of Oakland, California, passed a law making it illegal to approach a woman entering an abortion clinic without her consent, Walter B. Hoye II went to jail for standing on a public sidewalk outside an abortion clinic with a sign saying, "God loves you and your baby. Let us help you."
The ordained Baptist minister could have accepted a lesser sentence of community service, provided he agreed never to return to the clinic. But he preferred spending thirty days in the county jail to forfeiting his constitutional right to free speech and his Christian duty to offer help to women in need, most of whom were black like him. Two higher courts eventually exonerated him: one overturned his criminal conviction, and the other judged that the enforcement of the Oakland "bubble law" was unconstitutional.
Walter's dramatic days in prison, where he lived and preached the gospel and won the hearts of fellow inmates, are detailed in this book. The political machinations that created the bubble law and then entrapped Walter are also described, using public records. Both stories are told in the context of Walter's background as the descendant of black slaves and the disciple of his hero Martin Luther King Jr., whose niece, Alveda, has written the foreword for this book.

We are halfway through Lent, and for many of us, that means we are midway through Hallow’s Pray40 Challenge. Today, Ben Eriksen joins Sr. Orianne Pietra René, who reads the passages for “A Song for Nagasaki” in the French version of Hallow’s Pray40 Challenge. Sr. Orianne not only gives us a behind-the-scenes look at recording for Hallow, but she also provides insights into the life of Takashi Nagai and his wife, Midori.
Because Takashi’s story is told elsewhere, Sr. Orianne and Ben reflect on the impact that this story has had on their personal lives, and how Takashi is a model for Catholics struggling with the problem of evil and suffering. Both marvel at how relevant Takashi and Midori are for us today.

Who Influenced Aquinas’ Understanding of the Natural Law?

Fr. Lawrence Lew, O.P. is a Dominican friar as well as a photographer of sacred art. His new book, “Mysteries Made Visible: Praying the Rosary with Sacred Art,” brings together Fr. Lew’s stunning photography and his rich contemplations on the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, inviting all of us - those who pray the Rosary faithfully and those who struggle with the devotion - to pray with deeper reverence and greater understanding.
 
In this episode, Fr. Lew discusses how he came to discern his vocation as a Dominican, his interest in photography, and his great devotion to promoting the Rosary among the Faithful. He describes what he calls “Visio Divina”—that is, praying and meditating upon theological truths while viewing sacred art.

Fall is here and the kids are back in school, which makes this week’s episode particularly timely. Host Andrew Petiprin speaks with Mark Brumley, president of Ignatius Press, about the changing landscape of religious education, the explosion of Catholic resources now available to parents wishing to form their kids in the Faith, and the new <a href='https://www.wordoflifeseries.org/'>Word of Life</a> catechetical series, co-published by Ignatius Press and the Augustine Institute.
Brumley describes the approach adopted by Word of Life for “evangelizing catechesis,” which seeks to not only convey content about the doctrines and practices of the Catholic Faith, but also evangelize students, teachers, and parents as well. It is important to catechize the catechists, Brumley stresses, so they can in turn form the next generation in the Faith. Word of Life was designed to do just that, he says, with engaging print materials, as well as high-quality video and digital enrichment materials.

Back to school with Mark Brumley and Word of Life
