Michael O’Brien’s Favorite Novelist and Filmmaker

They’re simple questions, and ones that every believer has to confront at some point in his or her life: why do we suffer, and why does God—who we believe to be good and loving—allow it?
Humanity’s struggles with these questions have inspired countless works of art and literature—from the book of Job on through the ages—as well as theological treatises. But the struggle is also very personal; we all must undergo suffering in our lives, and as Christians, come to an understanding of how these sufferings fit into God’s plan for our redemption.

The second section, comprised entirely of an unpublished work on tripartite anthropology tracing the body-soul-spirit distinction from St. Paul, the patristic tradition, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, up to the modern period, will prove an invaluable guide for further study and reflection. Cardinal Henri de Lubac was a French theologian who lived in Europe during the tumultuous 20th century. He survived the front-line trenches of World War I and participated in the French Resistance of World War II. He lived to see the murder of the last Tsar of Russia, all the way to the fall of the Berlin Wall. During his life, he was known as a controversial theologian who was eventually elevated to a Cardinal by Pope Saint John Paul II and participated in the Second Vatican Council.
Today, we are joined by Geoffrey Zokal and Sam Soruch, who are creating a detailed documentary about Henri de Lubac. In this episode, they not only comment on the extraordinary life of Henri de Lubac, but also touch on some of the more controversial elements of his theology. Earlier this year, Dr. Francis Beckwith was appointed to a select board of scholars to advise the Trump administration on national efforts to protect and advance religious Liberty.

Pray40 With Hallow and Ignatius Press: A Song of Nagasaki and Takashi Nagai

The Catholic Church is on the verge of a transition of great consequence.
 


As a Catholic theologian, historian, and papal biographer George Weigel notes, the next pope will probably have been a teenager or a very young man during the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965); he may even have been a child during those years. Thus the next pope will not have been shaped by the experience of the Council and the immediate debates over its meaning and reception like Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis. The next pope, Weigel writes, "will be a transitional figure in a different way than his immediate predecessors. So it seems appropriate to ponder now what the Church has learned during the pontificates of these three conciliar popes—and to suggest what the next pope might take from that learning."

Interview with George Weigel, author of "The Next Pope"

Fifty years ago, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Henri de Lubac, and Joseph Ratzinger, among others, founded the theological journal Communio, which set out, as Balthasar put it, to “fight at all costs against the deadly polarization brought on by the fervor displayed by traditionalists and modernists alike” and “to perceive of the Church as a central communion, a community that originated from communion with Christ, who presented himself as a gift to the Church; as a communion that will enable us to share our hearts, thoughts, and blessings.”
 
In the last five decades, Communio has continued the work of its founding mission, advancing theological discussion and deepening the Church’s understanding of her role in the world. Later this month, a conference celebrating the journal’s 50th anniversary will take place at St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry.
 
In this episode, Mark Brumley and Carl E. Olson speak with the organizers of the conference—Matthew Kuhner, Ph.D., Vice President and Academic Dean at St. Bernard's; Daniel Drain, Coordinator of Academic Operations and Lecturer in Pastoral Theology at St. Bernard's; and Lisa Lickona, S.T.L., Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at St. Bernard's. They discuss the mission and legacy of "Communio," its continued relevance in the life of the Church, and what they hope the conference will achieve.

Who Influenced Aquinas’ Understanding of the Natural Law?

Since the 2012 release of her first book on the Sexual Revolution, Mary Eberstadt has engaged in what she considers an often thankless task—honoring the suffering of those who have been victimized by the massive changes that have rocked society since the 1960s. The Pill, no-fault divorce, and plummeting marriage rates have not made us freer, happier, or healthier, Eberstadt has argued; instead they’ve ushered in an era of unprecedented loneliness, mental health problems, and weakened support systems for the most vulnerable.
In this episode, Eberstadt speaks with Andrew Petiprin about her newest book, <a href='https://ignatius.com/adam-and-eve-after-the-pill-revisited-aeaprh/?utm_source=podcast&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_campaign=Adam+and+Eve+After+the+Pill%2C+Revisited&amp;utm_id=Adam+and+Eve+After+the+Pill%2C+Revisited'>Adam and Eve after the Pill, Revisited</a>, which looks at how the damaging forces of the Sexual Revolution have accelerated in the last decade, leaving more victims in their wake, often in the name of tolerance, acceptance, and freedom.
Eberstadt also sees many reasons for hope. More and more secular voices have begun to question the pieties of the Sexual Revolution, recognizing the chaos that has accompanied the dismantling of traditional family structures and articulating a yearning for connection and interdependence, rather than radical autonomy and isolation.

Mary Eberstadt sifts through the Sexual Revolution’s wreckage—and finds hope

<DIV>This volume, three separate books in one edition, is a collection of Josef Pieper's famous treatises on the three theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love. Each of these treatises was originally published as a separate work over a period of thirty-seven years, and here they are brought together in English for the first time. The first of the three that he wrote, On Hope, was written in 1934 in response to the general feeling of despair of those times. His "philosophical treatise" on Faith was derived from a series of lectures he gave in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His most difficult work, one that he struggled with for years - and almost abandoned - was his work On Love. Pieper now feels that this is the most important book he has written. He discusses not only the theological virtue of caritas-agape, but also of eros, sexuality, and even "love" of music and wine. </DIV>

Faith, Hope, Love

Because the Catholic Church has always taught that only men can be ordained to the priesthood instituted by Christ, there is a perception that the Church’s story is a story about men. There’s the Blessed Mother, of course, and maybe the occasional nun who rises to prominence, but since only men can be ordained, the thinking goes, it is men who have built and shaped the Church’s common life throughout the centuries.
Not only is this bad ecclesiology, it is bad history, argues historian Bronwen McShea. In this episode, Andrew Petiprin speaks with McShea about her new book, Women of the Church: What Every Catholic Should Know. March 25th marks the feast of the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. But this date also marks the destruction of the one ring in Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” So we were joined by a Tolkien scholar, Joseph Pearce, to talk about the author of this great myth and to explain the significance of this date in Middle Earth.
Joseph and Ben Eriksen discuss the major influences on Tolkien as both a man and the author and uncover many themes within Tolkien’s writings such as hope, eucatastophes, and Catholicism. They also talk about the true meaning of a “myth” which is not a flight from reality, but a flight into reality. In times of civil unrest and heightened public discourse about racial issues, it can be tempting—even for Catholics—to look only for political solutions to the divisions that plague our society. But if, as the Catholic Church teaches, racism is a sin and, as such, an obstacle to the soul’s growing in holiness, political arguments about policies and party platforms will not eradicate it. We will need to go deeper.
Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers is the author of the new book Building a Civilization of Love: A Catholic Response to Racism. He is passionate about having those deeper conversations about race and the moral and spiritual groundwork that must be laid in order to successfully combat racism in society. About: Élisabeth and Félix Leseur began their life together in France as a carefree young couple with a bright future ahead of them. They were beautifully and compatibly matched, except for one major difference—Élisabeth was a devout Catholic, and Félix was a firmly decided atheist. As they faced the seasons of life together, their relationship was tested, and both were called to deep spiritual transformation.
 


Out of love for her husband, Élisabeth spent her life offering her many sufferings for the sake of his conversion. After her death, and in response to the profound love he encountered in her writings, Félix converted and offered the rest of his life to God as a Dominican priest.
 


This biography is a lovely narrative of their marriage and the transformative power of God's love and grace in their lives. It also presents a charming picture of upper-middle-class French society at the turn of the last century. The cause for the canonization of Élisabeth Leseur has been opened by the Catholic Church.

We are halfway through Lent, and for many of us, that means we are midway through Hallow’s Pray40 Challenge. Today, Ben Eriksen joins Sr. Orianne Pietra René, who reads the passages for “A Song for Nagasaki” in the French version of Hallow’s Pray40 Challenge. Dr. Nathaniel Blake: How the Sexual Revolution Hurt All of Us

Fall is here and the kids are back in school, which makes this week’s episode particularly timely. Host Andrew Petiprin speaks with Mark Brumley, president of Ignatius Press, about the changing landscape of religious education, the explosion of Catholic resources now available to parents wishing to form their kids in the Faith, and the new <a href='https://www.wordoflifeseries.org/'>Word of Life</a> catechetical series, co-published by Ignatius Press and the Augustine Institute.
Brumley describes the approach adopted by Word of Life for “evangelizing catechesis,” which seeks to not only convey content about the doctrines and practices of the Catholic Faith, but also evangelize students, teachers, and parents as well. It is important to catechize the catechists, Brumley stresses, so they can in turn form the next generation in the Faith. Word of Life was designed to do just that, he says, with engaging print materials, as well as high-quality video and digital enrichment materials.
